Venezia :**(
If Sadness and Romance got together, their love child would be Venice. It’s such a moody, melancholy city, and I don’t think everyone is meant to “get” it. I’ve only been once in ‘05, and I remember first feeling in awe of the unconventional set-up of canals running through the city, and then immediately feeling inconvenienced by, like, all that WATER. And St. Mark’s Square has a few too many pigeons for one square. At first it’s all charming, like, “Aww, rats with wings. What could be cuter?” but then it’s like, “Seriously? Stop pecking at my gelato muthafucka.” Also, it’s kinda challenging to “get” Venice when the entire city smells like pee.
One day, I went to the top of Campanile, the bell tower in St. Mark’s Square. And that’s where I fell in loooove. Hard. The city is sinking, and still it has such an ATTITUDE about it. It’s like, “I’m not dying, you’re dying! I’ll be just FINE without walkable streets and citizens under the age of 70. I don’t need you! I have an obscene amount of shops promoting Carnevale year round, and my gondole rides are SO fn quaint. They put ‘It’s a Small World’ to SHAME.” And they really do.
